The drill is needed because some screw holes will have to be redrilled. Unfortunately, some holes in my set were off so assembly wasn't possible until they were drilled correctly. When I tried to assemble the corner unit, I found that the pilot holes were misplaced so I couldn't get the pieces to go together correctly. With my drill, I made new holes in short order and got everything to line up properly. The corner bench came out looking just fine, even with my adjustments. Now that it's completed, I have an attractive, sturdy kitchen set that will last indefinitely.
